Laser dentistry has allowed many dental procedures to be performed with very little pain, if any and most importantly no drilling. This also makes it possible to perform multiple procedures in a single appointment as a convenience to the patient. Lasers can be used in many different occasions like oral surgery, curing of restorative materials and removal of hard or soft tissue. Some other benefits of laser dentistry include:- Reduced heat and vibration- Faster treatment time- High precision- Little or no need for anesthetic- Increased rate of curing/bleaching- Less post-operative pain and swelling- Little or no bleeding- Fewer pain medications/antibiotics
How does it work?
The Waterlase is a revolutionary device that combines YSGG laser energy and water, to perform the procedures, and that is called HydroPhotonics. The precision of the Waterlase allows the Doctor to treat even very small targeted areas of tooth and soft tissue. Waterlase technology is less invasive and traumatic than the drill or other instruments which allows the surrounding areas to be unaffected.
Diode lasers are very useful in a variety of dental procedures. Their ability to reshape gums for creating better symmetry and change smiles in many people. Those kind of lasers treat lesions, ulcers and benign soft-tissue growths and remove areas of tooth decay and recently they have been shown to eliminate pockets of infected tissue in the gums. They are a great benefit in stopping the progress of occurring gum disease. In addition, diode lasers, are very effective in the uncovering of dental implants, the retraction of tissue for impression-taking, pulpotomies and reduction of tooth sensitivity. Diode lasers have been proven to be extremely safe in dental surgery, since they provide accurate and bloodless incisions, reduce pain during and after the procedure, reduce surgical risks such as infection and offer a much faster recovery than the traditional methods.
KaVo DIAGNOdent”Find and treat cavities even when you can’t see them.”
The KaVo DIAGNOdent detects cavities when the tooth appears to be healthy on the surface or when only a small portion of the cavity is visible. The small and sensitive laser probe detects even the smallest or newly developed cavities with a very high accuracy, without scraping, radiation or tissue damage. This small laser works by measuring differences in fluorescence between healthy and diseased tissue. The small light on the probe can penetrate into the tiniest fissures which allows the dentists to see much deeper and with much more detail than with traditional dental instruments, including x-rays.

A common misconception about laser power output is that power is somehow lost in the air. It’s not. As long as the spot size is the same, you get the same amount of power whether the laser probe is held 5 inches or twenty inches away from the power meter. Air is transparent to laser light, power does not magically disappear.
