Corrugated PVC piping with multiple deformations

I want to build a measurement fixture and would like a range-finder accurate to 0.001″ or more at a distance of 0.125″ to 12″ from the target surface being measured. Something like a CMM machine but without a physical probe.
I should specify that im not aligning two plates or anything i am measuring an unkown object that can be assumed to be in an envelope of a 0.5″ i want the laser to give me an exact measurement to eliminate the need for a manual micrometer measurement.
